Utrecht is in a festive mood this summer. Not only will we celebrate Utrecht’s birthday extensively, we get to host one of the biggest cycling events of the year as well. Enough reason to pay us a visit!
This year, we will mark the 900thanniversary of Utrecht acquiring city rights. Utrecht, the beautiful city that we have created together. Where the doors are always open. Where we see each other and keep an eye out for one another. Together, we are Utrecht. We have been for 900 years. And together, we will make Utrecht even more beautiful. Tomorrow, the day after and for another 900 years. But first, we are going to have a party and everyone is invited!
A little history..
On 2 June 1122, Emperor Henry V granted city rights to Utrecht and its residents. Utrecht became an official city – one of the very first cities in the Netherlands. During the Middle Ages, Utrecht was even the largest and most important city in the Dutch Republic.
Let’s celebrate!
We want to proudly celebrate the city’s birthday with a wonderful programme of activities for, by and with as many Utrecht residents as possible. The celebrations will take place between City Day on 2 June 2022 and St. Martin’s Day on 11 November 2022. Will you join us?
Vamos Utrecht!
You may still remember the start of the Giro (2010) and the Tour de France (2015). Utrecht is preparing for another wonderful cycling festival, the Vuelta. The city will color red in the weeks prior to the event!
On 19, 20 and 21 August, La Vuelta comes to the Netherlands. In 2 of the 3 stages, this Spanish Cycling Tour will visit Utrecht. Stage 1 goes straight through Utrecht. Stage 2 passes through Utrecht Region and finishes at the Utrecht Science Park. Vamos Utrecht!
